THIS FATAL SUBJECT

Eleanor Crook's picture No ghost in the machine (detail) by Susan Aldworth Haiku by Valerie Laws: TRANSPLANT / The body stays true to the lost heart, / remembers that perfect fit of valve,/ chamber, cell. Sedated, it cradles / the changeling heart, always doubts / the beautiful flushed fist knocking /on the body's walls, sharing its blood.

Confronting age-old taboos about death, artist Susan Aldworth, writer Valerie Laws, and sculptor Eleanor Crook explore and even celebrate the terrible beauty of the physical process of dying. As Artists in Residence at Gordon Museum of Pathology, we work in partnership with scientists at Kings College London Medical School, funded by a Wellcome Trust Arts Award.
